02 – 10.2003
This site is the first web presence for the Media Council of Papua
New Guinea and the Media Association of the Solomon Islands. It
was developed
to support the councils' journalism training, information sharing
and anti-corruption campaigning. The site was designed and built
by an interdisciplinary team of communication design, journalism
and media and communication students under the supervision of Sharon
Tickle and Marcus Foth.
At the launch on 16 Oct 2003, PNG's Minister for Intergovernmental
Relations Sir Peter Barter said he was full of admiration for what
has been accomplished and he hopes that the information sharing,
the site makes possible, will be the first step towards a deeper
relationship between PNG and the Solomon Islands media industries.
President of the Media Council of PNG Peter Aitsi said he wants
the site to be "a tool for training to enable journalists
in the region to exchange their experiences and learn together".
Between 17 and 23 November 2003 two staff from Port Moresby and
one from Honiara visited the Creative Industries Faculty
to learn how to manage the site themselves. Their visit is funded
by a Community Service Grant which was awarded by QUT to Sharon
Tickle and Marcus Foth.
The site is driven by PHP/MySQL scripts and features a dynamic
slide show as well as news, events, jobs and members listings which
can be edited through a secure admin interface.
