Geocultural Research & the New Spatial Turn: Understanding Socio-Cultural Phenomena through Geovisualisation

VC Research Fellowship 2014 – 2016

This project investigates how geo-spatial technologies (such as GIS, locative media, GPS, satellite imagery, and remote sensing) have been and can be brought into the media, communication, cultural studies research paradigm as tools that provide a more spatially nuanced understanding of cultural phenomena. It reviews current state-of-the-art uses of geo-spatial technologies and geovisualisation techniques, establishes an international network of leading researchers in the field, examines case studies to explore the potential of digital spatial approaches and applications, and develops a theoretical and methodological toolkit that can be used to train the next generation of media, communication, and cultural studies researchers.
