School-Community engagement: A critical approach to involving young people in urban planning
(PhD, 2009-2011)
Abstract
This study takes a critical approach to investigating the participation of a group of high school students in an urban planning project. The theories of space developed by Henri Lefebvre (1991), Edward Soja (1996) and Doreen Massey (1994) will inform the analysis and discussions of the way in which young people elucidate space and how society interprets space. A utopian lens informed by David Harvey (2000) develops the possibilities of space imagined by the young people. This research will draw on the principles that underpin a participatory research approach and will document the effectiveness and the challenges of this approach.
