Abstract
With the ever-increasing population of the world and the finite amount of resources the world has to offer that we are consuming unsustainably, it is not surprising that ecological sustainability has become a primary topic of interest and investigation. Currently in Australia, households throw away over $5AUD billion dollars worth of food annually (Catchlove, 2010). This is comprised of both foods that expires in storage before they could be consumed and food that is only partially consumed before its expiration date. This study investigates strategies to reduce food waste by encouraging people’s behaviours towards more sustainable food purchase, preparation and storage practices. The study is grounded in the fields of human-computer interaction and urban informatics and examines: firstly, the behaviour of consumers in households that lead to the high volume of food waste going to landfills; and secondly, potential design and technology interventions to influence the current practices
Biography
Geremy completed his undergraduate degree Griffith University in Information Technology majoring in Computer Science. He then continued his studies and completed his Honours degree in Information Technology with his topic looking at the Factors that Affect the Adoption of Smart Technology in Australian Agriculture. He has gathered working experiences in various government and private sector positions including Queensland Health, CSIRO and Griffith University.
Geremy’s PhD focus is on environmental sustainability (specifically food sustainability), factors that influence behaviour, ubiquitous computer and human-computer interaction.
When Geremy isn’t working on his PhD, he enjoys relaxing at the movies, or playing some sports (such as beach volleyball, indoor soccer, running and footy). Geremy is always enthusiastic about his studies and tries to pursue knowledge and understanding at every chance.
