BCompSc(Hons) Germany, PhD Qld
Dr Markus Rittenbruch is a Senior Research Fellow with the Institute for Future Environments (IFE) and the School of Design, Creative Industries Faculty at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
He has over 18 years of research experience in the fields of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), and Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp). Before joining QUT he has been invited to work at various research organisations in Germany and Australia, including the University of Bonn, the Distributed Systems Technology Centre (DSTC), the University of Queensland, the Australasian CRC for Interaction Design (ACID), and NICTA, Australia’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Centre of Excellence.
Until recently Markus was one of the project leads at The Cube, a cutting edge interactive learning and visualisation facility, located at QUT’s new Science and Engineering Centre. His project developed the CubIT system, a flexible large-scale presentation and collaboration framework that uses the Cube’s massive multi-touch walls. The framework enables QUT’s academic, professional and student population, to upload and share content utilising a wide range of innovative interaction mechanisms. Within Urban Informatics, Markus leads the Street Computing initiative, which sets out to explore and redefine the relationship between people and their increasingly digitalised urban environments.
Markus’ research focuses on solving problems in urban and organisational contexts through the design of engaging, innovative interaction technologies and approaches. His interests include the design of collaborative software, advanced models of awareness in groupware, in particular contextual and intentional awareness, social software, ambient, ubiquitous and physical computing, natural user interfaces and different ways of interfacing with sensors and sensor data.
Markus has published over 30 peer reviewed book chapters, journals articles and conference papers, including publications in the leading journals in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction Journal) and CSCW (Journal on Computer Supported Cooperative Work), as well as leading conferences in UbiComp, HCI and information systems.
