Dr Christine Satchell

Dr Christine Satchell is a Senior Research Fellow with the Urban Informatics Research Lab at Queensland University of Technology. She has been awarded a DECRA grant by the Australian Research Council to fund her research into Human-Computer Interaction After Dark which will investigate the use of mobile technology to enhance personal safety at night.
Dr Satchell’s research is dedicated to understanding the social and cultural nuances of everyday user behaviour in order to inform the design of new technology. Integral to this is her development of a methodological approach that embeds cultural theory within HCI published at CHI 2008. Dr Satchell has published 67 publications including an edited book, 6 scholarly book chapters, refereed journal articles, referred conference papers and other publications. Her work has been cited by 278.
As an internationally recognised researcher in the field of Human-Computer Interaction, she has strong links to the international design community. Her roles have included Techncial Program Co-Chair for Communities & Technologies C&T 2013 in Munich, Associate Chair for CHI 2012 in Texas, Technical Program Chair for Horizon CSCW 2011 in China, and Techncial Program Co-Chair for OzCHI 2008 in Cairns.
Dr Satchell is a respected commentator on human engagement with new technology and appears regularly in mainstream media platforms. Her research has been covered by New Scientist, Wired Magazine, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Chanel Ten News, The Project, The Age Yahoo News, Panorama Magazine (Italy), The Buzz on Radio National, JJJ, The Herald Sun, The Australian IT Section, Cosmos Magazine, and a feature story in The Weekend Australian Magazine, and over 60 Internet blogs such as Gizmodo.
As a result of her PhD research into mobile phone innovation, Dr Satchell invented the Swarm mobile social networking patent.
